Biomedical Surfaces 2006

The one-day seminar programme, chaired by Allan Matthews, Professor of Surface Engineering at the University of Sheffield, reviewed recent advances in surface engineering, hard coatings and soft plasma deposited coatings from the different perspectives of research, development, production and therapeutic applications. Speakers explored the latest developments in coating and surface modification technologies for biomedical materials and products. The lead speaker was Dr Sally McArthur,  Senior lecturer in Biomedical Engineering, University of Sheffield.

Other speakers including Dr Julia Shelton, Reader in Biomedical Engineering at Queen Mary, University of London, Dr Paul Stevenson, Innovatek Medical Ltd, Dr Darren Bromley-Davenport, Innovatek Medical Ltd, Dr Rafael Rodriguez,  AIN, Rhod Turner, Tecvac Ltd, and Dr Alan Brown of CSMA  Ltd, explored the critical contribution surface engineering makes to biomedical technologies and their clinical effectiveness.

They  assessed the full spectrum of materials including polymers, ceramics and metals and the development of new coating and surface modification technologies which can transform surfaces to improve biocompatibility, reduce wear or match them precisely to the clinical task, inside and outside the body, for surgical intervention, prostheses and implants, drug delivery or patient security.
